What we do

Most technical issues over the ramp-up of hydrogen in the distribution grids are being clarified through our studies/surveys (see our reports):

  • Member infrastructure and operations.
  • Geospatial assessment showing that at least half of hydrogen demand will be delivered to the end user by a DSO.
  • How well underway DSOs are in getting ready for hydrogen and what is needed to transform the DSO business.
  • Database of member projects that demonstrate the feasibility of converting grid to hydrogen.
  • The 2026 Planning Guide for Distribution Grids to Hydrogen that shows how the grids can be made ready for hydrogen.

Accordingly, our work in 2026 will focus on outstanding technical issues plus the business case and external factors that can make or break the case for DSO transformation to hydrogen. We work under the following pillars:

Advocacy and Communications: Maintain awareness of the role of distribution system operators (DSOs) as key enablers of the hydrogen transition and drivers of regional economic development. Promote the role of DSOs in supporting industrial demand, data centres and energy valleys, particularly where electricity grids are constrained. Engage with European institutions, the newly-formed DSO Entity, national governments, local authorities and industry partners to support the implementation of the EU Gas Package and contribute to discussions on future support and governance of hydrogen distribution networks.

Technical Knowledge Sharing: Facilitate knowledge sharing among DSOs on the technical, commercial and regulatory aspects of transitioning gas distribution networks to hydrogen, through in-person meetings, webinars and an online knowledge-sharing platform.

Research: Conduct research and publish data that support the business case for hydrogen-ready distribution systems. This includes analysing national implementation approaches to the Gas Package, assessing DSO peak capacity in the European energy system, and identifying feasible financing and business models for transforming natural gas distribution networks to hydrogen. Activities that provide evidence insights to support policymaking, strengthen the DSO business case and contribute technical expertise to the wider gas community.

Policy & Industry Events: Whilst previous phases of the project have centred on research and targeted knowledge sharing, we are now focussing on advocacy to showcase the project research results on the role of hydrogen distribution in a decarbonised Europe. To this end, Ready4H2 takes part in relevant industry and policy events in Europe and overseas.

Project Database

We maintain a database of projects undertaken by our members that are researching technical and commercial issues and executing field-based pilot projects to demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale hydrogen delivery. The information and lessons learned from these projects are shared between members.

58 projects:

  • 79% Field Projects (half will be scaled up)
  • 74% Repurposed Networks
  • 68% Pure Hydrogen
  • 32% Completed Projects

Policy & Industry Events

Whilst Phase 3 of the project (2024) centred on research and targeted knowledge sharing, Phase 4 and 5 (2025, 2026) will focus on advocacy to showcase the project research results on the role of hydrogen distribution in a decarbonised Europe. To this end, Ready4H2 is planning to take part in numerous industry and policy events in Europe and abroad. See here the list of events we attended in 2025.
