On 26 June, Ready4H2 held its first workshop in the 2024 series, showcasing projects that are underway or have completed the conversion of a grid section from natural gas to hydrogen, for blended quantities and 100% hydrogen. Lessons learned from projects were shared, as well as recommendations for members embarking on similar projects.

Thüga and DVGW presented the state of play of the Gas-Hydrogen Package and the status of the European Standardisation for hydrogen in gas infrastructure (resp). DSOs were advised to engage more actively regarding their interpretation of new regulations and to showcase successful projects.

The state-of-the-art in certification of gas distribution grids was shared – for materials, components and processes. Alliander shared insights from its Lochem project (converting gas pipelines to 100% hydrogen), GRDF on its hydrogen pipeline technical program, highlighting the role of certification and testing, and DVGW group on its VerifHy database of H2-ready components. Insights on blending were presented by Cadent on the UK’s support for blending up to 20% hydrogen into gas networks and SPPD on its H2Pilot project, blending 10% hydrogen into gas grids and gaining certification.

Information on projects testing 100% H2 introduction were shared by DVGW, Cadent and Alliander (pilot projects at Rozenburg and Wagenborgen). Overall, the presentations showed the complexities but feasibility of conversion.
