(De)blending hydrogen and methane: commercial aspects

Following the workshop on the technical aspects of de-blending and hydrogen purification in December 2024, Ready4H2 hosted its 6th workshop with a focus on the commercial aspects and business case of the same.

Speakers from Cadent Gas (UK), Gasnet  (Czech Republic), Hinicio (international) and SPP-Distribucia (Slovakia) gave presentations on a range of topics, including the European legislative framework, public perception and financial implications to distribution system operators of blending and the interplay between gas transmission and distribution. Topics covered:

  • An overview of hydrogen blending from system and commercial perspectives.
  • Gasnet’s Pardubice Gas Polygon pilot project on injecting a hydrogen blend into an existing gas distribution grid, whose trial phase began in 2025. Challenges and early lessons learned during the project were shared with participants, including the certification process and cooperation with national regulators.
  • Hinicio - a technical and strategic consultant for hydrogen - presented on the role of DSOs in managing hydrogen purity requirements from the perspective of both transmission and distribution system operators. The need for planning between TSOs and DSOs was highlighted with different models showing the risk of blending/deblending becoming increasingly costly for DSOs and customers, depending on the level of purity imposed by TSOs and subsequent additional CAPEX and OPEX for purification.
  • SPP-distribucia presented an overview of EU legislation for Guarantees of Origins for gas under the Renewable Energy Directive II, its associated Delegated Acts and regulations. The CertifHy EU RFNBO Scheme - officially recognised by the European Commission since December 2024 – was shown as an example of a scheme that is compliant with EU regulations for renewable hydrogen and derivatives.

Faisal Haroon, strategy and policy specialist at Cadent Gas and member of the Ready4H2 Steering Committee, confirmed the relevance of this topic in the overall future energy market: “Hydrogen blending leverages existing gas infrastructure to lower carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and support a smooth transition toward a sustainable energy future”.
