The International Gas Union (IGU) held its biannual council meetings in London select this week. Ready4H2 is part of the global research being conducted by IGU through its Director, Barbara Jinks, being on the Distribution Committee. The focus of IGU’s newly published Strategy is enhanced cooperation between members, better reflection of regional differences in the gases industry, and evolving the Union to embrace all forms of gas, ie biomethane and hydrogen in addition to natural gas.
Amongst the key issues discussed, the rise of AI and the demand for energy for data centres was recognised as being a gamechanger, as gas supply can be quicker and more reliable than electricity and the energy demand is so large that electricity supply may be unfeasible. This also paves the way for a switch to cleaner gases, such as hydrogen in the future.
