The Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) held its third Seminar Global and Arab Developments in Hydrogen: Trends, Challenges and Opportunities at the ENPPI headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, on April 17, 2025. The seminar gathered together participation from researchers and experts, including Ready4H2 Director Barbara Jinks who presented the project’s recent research results on hydrogen distribution.

The key takeaways by the audience included the essential role that gas distribution networks  currently play in delivering energy to end users, and their continued role in delivering renewable and low-carbon gases, the fact that the large-scale plans for the energy transition will require all forms of energy transportation to meet all needs, and that the distribution system operators are ready and able to transform their networks from methane to hydrogen.

As Barbara stated: “It is no surprise that nations outside the Ready4H2 project are interested in our results, the issues are the same all over the world – how to get vast quantities of renewable energy to the end user in the most affordable, safe and efficient way, often across remote regions that are located far from the traditional energy sources”.

Based on recommendations issued during the seminar, the ArabH2 Hydrogen Energy Development Steering Initiative has been launched this week. The initiative aims to highlight the latest developments and challenges in the field of hydrogen and to facilitate the exchange of expertise among national and international experts (see news here).

Ready4H2 has been subsequently invited for a closer relation with OAPEC and to share the project’s results during future events.
