Demonstrating the pivotal role of DSOs in the european hydrogen ecosystem

The Ready4H2 project had the chance to share its preliminary results at the HyVolution event in Paris last week. Thomas Muller, chair of the Steering Committee, hosted the presentation at his company's booth, GRDF, where he and project director Barbara Jinks presented an overview of the three studies which are reaching their conclusions. This major international event was a perfect venue for this presentation, as the Ready4H2 project covers 10 countries across Europe and looks at issues common to all countries looking to ramp up hydrogen use.

This comprises:

  • A mapping exercise to analyse where hydrogen demand sits geospatially in relation to the planned European Hydrogen Backbone and national hydrogen transmission plans, and the extent to which gas distribution grids are essential in delivering the hydrogen to the end user;
  • A cost estimate for both repurposing and building new gas grids;
  • And a survey of grid operators in nine countries on their readiness to accept hydrogen in their operations, in accordance with the Ready4H2 Transformation Roadmap

Results show clearly that the gas distribution grids are essential to Europe's ability to deliver hydrogen where it’s needed and at the required volumes and that the majority of hydrogen will be delivered through the grids, that the grid operators are well underway in the process of transforming their grids to be able to accept hydrogen when needed, and both repurposing and expanding distribution grids are significantly cost-effective ways of delivering large volumes of energy.

The three reports will be published by the end of February.
